The new National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation (NMOHMF) in Arlington opens to the public on Tuesday, March 25 — which is National Medal of Honor Day. The Medal of Honor is awarded by the President of the United States to those who demonstrate great valor and sacrifice serving in the Armed Forces. It is the highest military decoration given to those who serve in combat.

About the museum

Of the 40 million Americans who have served in the US Armed Forces, only 4,000 have been awarded the prestigious medal and only 61 recipients are alive today. The NMOHMF allows visitors to learn about 3,520+ Medal of Honor recipients including William Kyle Carpenter of the US Marine Corps and Webster Anderson of the US Army.

The museum — which sits on five acres — was designed by the late architect Rafael Viñoly. Visitors can explore the 25,000 sqft of exhibits including interactive galleries, pictures and artifacts, letters from home, and more. Guests can even virtually interview recipients or participate in virtual reality experience that takes you on a critical medical mission.

Free grand opening event

Before the NMOHMF opens to the public, it’ll host a grand opening “Mission to Inspire” spectacular on Saturday, March 22 at 7 p.m. During the event, enjoy fireworks, a 30-minute drone show, and live performances from the US Army Herald Trumpets, the US Army Strings, the US Naval Academy Glee Club + more. Plus, hear from some of the 34 recipients who will be in attendance.

Guests interested in attending are encouraged to register.
