🏢 The emergent corner of downtown

The future of downtown Fort Worth: southeast quadrant

Construction is booming in downtown — specifically the southeast quadrant from 9th Street to West Lancaster Avenue and Jones to Houston Streets, which has arguably the most going on right now.

Keep reading for some notable projects.

Texas A&M-Fort Worth

This three-phase, 3.5-acre project has broken ground. Ultimately, it will be the span three buildings, four city blocks + greenspace. Phase 1 is an eight-story, $185 million Law and Education building, which is on track to be finished in December 2025.

How it reshapes downtown: In addition to pulling in new students and faculty, the campus adds a prominent higher education player in Fort Worth for years to come.

Sheraton Fort Worth Downtown Hotel

The hotel was recently transformed as part of a $50 million renovation project, and now features new meeting rooms, conference amenities, a private lounge on the 10th floor, and a 200-seat (including 40 bartop seats) West + Stone restaurant.

How it reshapes downtown: The hotel affords Fort Worth more opportunity to attract conventions, and the $50 million investment signifies a major brand betting on the city.

Convention Center upgrades

Fort Worthians voted in favor of a 2% hotel occupancy tax hike earlier this month, which will be used to fund Convention Center improvements.

How it reshapes downtown: The improvements aim to prompt tourism capital and potentially better walkability between downtown and South Main Street.

Water Gardens upgrade

In March, City Council approved a $366,877 contract with Freese and Nichols to evaluate infrastructure in the 50-year-old landmark. A $6.5 million final design could be funded through the 2022 bond project.

How it reshapes downtown: Better infrastructure, more walkability, an additional tourist attraction, and even more for residents and visitors to experience.

Stay tuned for more downtown development in future articles, including the Omni Fort Worth Hotel expansion.

Big 12 Baseball Tournament: TCU goes for third deep postseason run

The 2024 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Tournament begins on Tuesday, May 21 and concludes with a 6 p.m. championship game on Saturday, May 25. The entire tournament will be played at Globe Life Field in Arlington, and single-session tickets are now available.

This year’s format has 10 teams under double-elimination rules. TCU Baseball, which has had tremendous post-season success under third-year coach Kirk Saarloos, enters the tournament as the No. 9 seed. They will play the No. 4 seed West Virginia Mountaineers today at 12:30 p.m.

If the Horned Frogs win, they’d play the No. 1 seed Oklahoma Sooners on Wednesday, May 22 at 12:30 p.m. Otherwise, they’d play the loser of Tuesday’s Kansas State University vs. University of Kansas match up, on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Once they record two losses, they’re gone. The Horned Frogs don’t need to win the Big 12 to advance — right now, they are projected to be a NCAA College World Series regional candidate.

Just in time for the end of the Fort Worth Independent School district academic year, it’s time to hop in the pool. The Forest Park Pool ribbon-cutting is this Friday, May 24 at 6:30 p.m. (The first actual swim is Saturday, May 25 at noon.) Renovations were first announced in 2022, and construction began in February 2023. It’s a great community option as the heat ramps up.
