Introducing our 2024 Picture of the Year contest

FTW-POTY-Finalist-2-disco-hat
“Sundance Square Disco Ball Hat” | Photo submitted by Chelsea R.
At the end of 2023, we ran a photo contest and garnered over 1,000 submissions. Thanks, Fort Worth. We love how shutterbug-y you are.

The photo above — “Sundance Square Disco Ball Hat” by Chelsea R. — got over 32% of the votes + clinched the award.

We’re almost halfway through 2024 now (whoa), so we’re officially opening up the 2024 Picture of the Year contest. You can submit shots now + we’ll casually remind you a few more times before the end of the year. We’ll pick a winner at the beginning of 2025.

The rules

Most important rule: Photo submissions must include a visual element that directly connects to Fort Worth. Examples include a photo from a local sporting event, music performance, festival, or other 2024 happening; a picture taken at a local park; or a shot that highlights a landmark in our city.

Photos that do not include a local element will not be considered. Additionally, photos that include nudity or offensive language or visuals will not be accepted.

Finalists will be selected by our team at the beginning of next year, and then we’ll open up a vote via the newsletter and social media after that.

Where to go

Fit check: How’s TCU Baseball looking?

While the TCU academic year may have ended with Saturday’s Commencement ceremonies, there’s still business on the baseball diamond.

This is the third year of the Kirk Saarloos head coaching era, and the first two years have seen incredible postseason success. In 2022, the Horned Frogs made the Regional Final of the College Station Super Regional, ultimately losing to Texas A&M. Last year, they reached the semifinals of the College World Series, losing to the University of Florida Gators.

This year, TCU Baseball has a 30-17 record overall and 13-14 record in the Big 12. Good news: All of their remaining games are at home, including Big 12 battles with Baylor University and West Virginia University. The Big 12 Baseball Tournament starts on Tuesday, May 21. As of now, the Horned Frogs would open against the University of Kansas Jayhawks.

If you’re looking for some trinkets for the summer (or perhaps even a bigger purchase), there’s a neighborhood-wide yard sale in Oakhurst — northeast of downtown — across Memorial Day weekend. Over 35 homes are participating from Friday, May 24 to Sunday, May 26. If it’s hot (read: “when it’s hot”), this neighborhood is very shady.
