Whether you’re a sports fanatic — or just look good in purple — when it comes to sports, Fort Worth has no shortage of teams to support.

In this guide, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about 10 North Texas teams, so whether you’re already a devoted sports fan or you’re new to the area, we hope it can serve as a valuable resource.

Dallas Stars (NHL) | Est. 1967

The ice hockey team is a member of the Central Division of the NHL’s Western Conference.

Originally founded as the Minnesota North Stars as part of the 1967 NHL expansion, the franchise merged with the Cleveland Barons in 1978 before relocating to North Texas and rebranding as the Dallas Stars in 1993.

Where they play: American Airlines Center
  • When they first came to Dallas, the Stars played at Reunion Arena in downtown. In 2001, they moved to the Victory Park venue, which they share with the Dallas Mavericks.
  • When in ice rink mode, the American Airlines Center can hold 18,532 spectators.
Mascot: Victor E. Green
  • The fluffy, green alien has hockey sticks for antennae and was born in “a galaxy far, far away.”
  • His best friend is The Zamboni + he measures 84 pucks tall.
Team colors: Victory green, black, silver, skyline green, white
Major accomplishments:
  • The Stars won the Stanley Cup in 1999, but have played in the finals five times across the entire franchise history.
  • They appeared in the conference championships in 1999, 2000, and 2020 + hold two Presidents’ Trophies (1998 and 1999).
  • Brett Hull became the first Stars player inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009, followed by Ed Belfour, Joe Nieuwendyk, and Mike Modano.

  • Cowtown Burger Showdown | Saturday, March 16 | 5-10 p.m. | River Ranch Stockyards, 500 NE 23rd St., Fort Worth | $15-$75 | Local grillmasters will be competing to make the best burger in North Texas — proceeds support Rivertree Academy.

  • After 10 years, Travis and Emma Heim — the founders of Heim Barbecue — are stepping aside as the operators of their four restaurants. The couple will remain partners in the enterprise but operations will cede to their business partner Will Churchill, who owns Fort Brewery Pizza. (Fort Worth Star-Telegram)

  • The former Romano’s Macaroni Grill on South University Drive will soon be home to a new eatery. Rex Benson — the current proprietor + founder’s son of the neighboring Ol’ South Pancake House — is set to open Rex’s Bar & Grill in early fall. The sports bar will feature a 360-degree scoreboard in the center of the room. (Fort Worth Magazine)

  • $80 million. That’s how much money North Texas will recieve as part of the national $3.3 billion initiative to reconnect communities cut off by transportation infrastructure. The money will be used for the Bridging Highway Divides for DFW Communities program to build pedestrian caps for four local roadways. (WFAA)

  • TechFW, a local tech startup incubator, named Ryan Brown as its first CEO. The entrepreneur transformed Earth Day Texas into the global EarthX initiative + will help lead and grown the local nonprofit.
Development
  • Construction crews have topped out on Wells Fargo’s new $500 million regional campus in Irving. The 22-acre project overlooking Lake Carolyn will include 850,000 sqft of offices and is set to open at the end of 2025. (The Dallas Morning News)
