More than 957,000 people (and thousands of businesses) contribute to the Fort Worth metro area’s economy. But have you ever wondered about Cowtown’s heaviest hitters? Consider this Fort Worth Business 101 — your guide to our region’s six key industries and major employers.
The key industries
Six key industries represent Fort Worth’s economy, based on data from the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce. We’ve listed them in order of employment numbers.
Transportation and Warehousing | 62,000 employees
With AllianceTexas’ $120 billion economic impact on North Texas, Cowtown is ideal for its easy access to airports, rail, and highway services.
Healthcare and Social Assistance | 55,000 employees
With massive providers like JPS Health Network, Cook Children’s Medical Center + Texas Health Resources, it’s hard to live in Cowtown without knowing at least one person in the healthcare industry.
Government | 52,000 employees
When you account for the federal, state, and local employees, it adds up to a lot. The largest employers include the US Air Force Reserve, Tarrant County, and the City of Fort Worth.
Retail Trade | 45,000 employees
The area is filled with 10+ shopping districts and dominated by the Western retail experience with local brands like Tandy Leather, M.L. Leddy’s, Justin Brands, Ariat, and Old Gringo Boots.

A new Japanese restaurant opened in the former Tributary Cafe location in Riverside. Kingyo Sushi and Ramen House opened at 2813 Race St. and serves 11 types of ramen and sushi from classic rolls to chef’s specials to sashimi. Bonus: It’s BYOB.

The Sid Richardson Foundation established a $2.5 million grant for the engineering programs at the upcoming Texas A&M-Fort Worth. The first building of the $320 million research campus is slated to open in late 2025.
Transit
Hop on Trinity Metro services for free to vote in the primary election on Tuesday, March 5. Notify the driver or conductor on any bus, ZIPZONE rideshare, ACCESS paratransit, TEXRail, or TRE of your destination to or from the polling station for free passage.
Health
TimelyCare — a Fort Worth-based telehealth provider catered to higher education — is expanding virtual healthcare resources for K-12 teachers, administrators, and support staff. The expansion includes 24/7 on-demand care, no costs or copays, reduced wait times, and a diverse provider network.
Legacy
Local Hispanic activist Rita Rodriguez-Utt died on Sunday at 80 years old from kidney failure. A Worth Heights advocate, she was a founding member of the Historians of Latino Americans Tarrant County. Funeral arrangements are pending. (Fort Worth Report)

British conductor Dame Jane Glover will be the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra’s next Principal Guest Conductor starting August 2025. The announcement comes on the heels of maestro Robert Spano’s three-year appointment as the Music Director for the Washington National Opera starting in 2025.
Environment
Register now for the Cowtown Great American Cleanup at six different city locations on Saturday, March 23, 8-11 a.m. Plus, after the cleanup, join local radio station KFWB at Sycamore Park for a free hot dog lunch, Trashion Fashion Show, pet adoptions + more. In 2023, volunteers removed 174,000+ lbs of trash.
Eat
Have you tried The High Vegan? The small restaurant opened at 8008 Camp Bowie W. Blvd. at the end of 2023 and serves sub sandwiches, empanadas, and Cajun pasta — hold the meat and dairy. The restaurant features Louisiana-inspired “munchies” and is open Thursday-Sunday.
Active
The Fort Worth Tennis Association is inviting intermediate and advanced players ages 21-45 to participate in Sets in the City Cowtown. From March 20 to May 8, the league will play on Wednesday evenings at the TCU Tennis Center. Registration is $60 and closes Friday, March. 1.
