On Saturday night, flames rose from Cantina Cadillac in the Stockyards when a broken gas line caused a fire to engulf the historic building and the roof to collapse — thankfully, no one was injured.
Fire and water caused extensive damage to the popular honky-tonk, but owner Jay Hester said he hopes to hold a grand re-opening in about six months. Let’s take a look back at what made this bar so loveable.
Constructed in 1908, the three-story brick building is located on the corner of West Exchange and Ellis Avenues. The ground floor housed a furniture store with a hotel and boarding house on the upper levels. Later, it became a Masonic fraternal lodge.
The side of the building bore the remnants of a long-forgotten cigar advertisement with a two-story owl painting keeping watch over the street.
The 1908 building features brick detailing around its old wooden windows.
In 1982, the ground floor was converted into a bar. Decorated with historic photos, posters, and longhorn heads, Cantina Cadillac became a popular hangout in the district. It even rated a mention in Casey Donahew’s “Stockyards” song.
The top floors serve as the Cadillac Hotel with 10 guest rooms and a cozy, casual parlor.
Now it’s your turn — did you play your best game of pool at Cadillac’s? Make your musical debut on the stage? Meet your sweetheart on the dance floor? Share your favorite memory and a photo or two with us.

Last week, the Dallas Museum of Art selected Spanish architecture firm Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos (NSA) to design its $175 million renovation.
Led by Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano, the studio is known for innovative facades like the Contemporary Art Center in Córdoba, Spain, and Montblanc Haus in Hamburg, Germany.
The design expands the museum’s audience while preserving much of the original building + includes:
A perforated facade with LED-generated artwork
A floating contemporary art gallery on the roof
A new interior circulation system that functions like an internal street
Transparent glazing that will allow passers-by to see inside
A series of planted roofs with integrated rainwater collection
A newly formed Master Facilities Plan task force will hold an inaugural meeting in September to kick off the project with NSA and work to secure funding.
Each of the six participating finalists will receive an honorarium of $50,000 for their design work + $10,000 for expenses.

Despite the heat, I love getting outside early and watching the city wake up. It’s my favorite time to see the wildlife that share our landscape. I can’t wait to learn more about the birds, fish, and animals that live in North Texas’ waterways in naturalist Amy Martin’s new book “Wild DFW.”
