The first National Lacrosse League team in North Texas kicks off their season tomorrow.
Panther City Lacrosse Club “is Fort Worth’s team,” according to President and CEO of Panther City LC Greg Bibb, meaning that on a crowded North Texas sports roster, the Prowlers will be the only professional team to call Fort Worth home.
With home games played at Dickies Arena for a double-dose of new (new sports team + newly built arena), we’re more excited for the season to start than this fellow Texan after a big win. Here’s what you need to know.
Dates to remember
Sat., Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. — Panther City Lacrosse Club’s first game, played against the Philadelphia Wings on Philly’s home turf at Wells Fargo Center. Here’s how to watch.
Fri., Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. — The Prowler’s first home game at Dickies Arena against the Vancouver Warriors. Get tickets here starting at $21, or watch at home.
Names to drop at parties
Tracey Kelusky is the head coach and earned a spot in the National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame from his 14 seasons in the NLL (he retired in 2014). He’s a former No. 1 overall pick, a five-time NLL All Star + an All-Star MVP.
Jonathan Donville is the team’s first overall pick from the 2021 NLL Entry Draft. He’s a right-handed forward + a recent Cornell graduate and student athlete with a .380 shot percentage.
A hat-trick of facts
- The NLL plays box lacrosse, which differs from field lacrosse in that it’s played on turf indoors with different spacing, goal size + more.
- This is the restart of the NLL season after the league suspended games during the pandemic in 2020.
- There used to be a Texas Major League Lacrosse team — the Dallas Rattlers — but the team ceased operations after the 2019 season.
