Texas Parks and Wildlife has secured 60,000+ acres of privately owned land to convert into new public parks and expand existing ones.
Among new parks is the 4,871-acre Palo Pinto Mountains, a former ranch located west of Fort Worth. Outdoor enthusiasts will remember that a majority of the land was acquired way back in 2011. Talk about anticipation. Guided hikes will be offered as soon as January, with a full opening set for fall 2026.
Another highlight from the deal is the addition of Post Oak Ridge (~3,100 acres north of Austin’s Lake Travis) — set to open in 2029.
One expansion includes tripling the size of Enchanted Rock. But, the biggest upgrade of all is the addition of the Chinati Mountains — enlarging by 39,000 acres. That’s so much room for activity. But wait — there’s even more to look forward to.
On Friday, 2,000 soccer fans piled into Billy Bob’s Texas to watch the 2026 FIFA World Cup Draw. Forty-eight teams were announced, and six more will be named in March.
