✈️ Up in the air

Air traffic has been reduced at 40 US airports — including Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. By 9 a.m. on Friday, DFW Airport had already experienced 58 flight cancellations, while Dallas Love Field experienced 18. And those numbers are modest. The Federal Aviation Administration anticipates that cancellations will ramp up to 10% this week.

To help make your time at DFW Airport as smooth as possible, we’ve created a guide that covers everything from parking and security to concessions and gates.

What to know:

  • Flight status | While we recommend staying updated via your respective airline, you can also check the airport’s dashboard for your flight status in a pinch.
  • TSA | DFW can get busy, so the airport advises giving yourself enough time to be at security two hours before your departure time. Editor’s tip: Enroll in TSA PreCheck for lower wait times.

📈 Ask an expert: What is certificate laddering?

It’s simple: We all want better returns on our investments.

Certificates of Deposit (CDs) are one of the most reliable options for better APY, but many members are naturally concerned about locking up their funds for longer periods (and potentially losing out on future rates).

Enter: Certificate laddering, an investment strategy that’s growing in popularity, designed to stagger your certificate terms to keep your money partially liquid.

AKA: maximize your gains without sacrificing flexibility.

🪜 Certificate laddering in practice

Imagine you have $15,000 to invest. Instead of going all in on one 5-year certificate, you can ladder:

  • $5,000 in a one-year certificate
  • $2,500 in a two-year certificate
  • $1,500 in a three-year certificate

The benefits are twofold. You still guarantee returns that outpace nearly all savings or money market accounts, but you aren’t trapped if you need to access funds unexpectedly.

Looking for some guidance? Talk through your financial strategy or see about opening a CD with a local team member at United Texas Credit Union.

News Notes

Community

Tomorrow, Nov. 11 is Veterans Day. Expect various closures for this federal holiday commemorating people who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Honor our military personnel at the Tarrant County Veterans Day Parade at 11 a.m.

Mansion Monday

A stair-climbing robot vacuum is among Time Magazine’s 300 best inventions of 2025. If it takes a wrong turn, you can also use voice commands to help it out. That makes the prospect of cleaning this recently listed University Park mansion a little less daunting.

History

November is Native American Heritage Month. There are 574 federally recognized tribes across the nation — and three in Texas. Scroll down to learn more.

Drink

Youth baseball and softball aren’t the only things you’ll find at Burleson’s Chisenhall Fields Sports Complex. Parents will soon find beer. Yep — last week, Burleson City Council approved alcohol sales at youth ball fields. But it comes with stipulations. (Fort Worth Star-Telegram)

On This Day

On Nov. 10, 1969, the first-ever episode of “Sesame Street” aired. Over the years, many of us have learned and laughed with Elmo, Cookie Monster, Bert + Ernie, and all the other familiar faces. Continue their legacy with a random act of kindness around Fort Worth.

Environment

Scientists have uncovered dozens of new aquatic species in the Southern Ocean, including a carnivorous “death ball” sponge that uses tiny hooks to capture its prey. You don’t need to travel that far to see local wildlife for yourself — the Dallas World Aquarium is full of wonder. (ABC News)

Try This

We don’t make the rules — cooler weather calls for more nights cozied up on the couch. “Friday Night Lights” was just named the best television series set in Texas, so it’s the perfect excuse to hit play (again). Bonus: Elevate your night in with takeout from a new local restaurant. (Screen Rant)

Watch

And speaking of Friday night lights. Did you know you can stream Friday night football on WFAA+? Meteorologist Pete Delkus shares more than just weather forecasts.

The Word

The viral “6-7" trend has made it into the record books — it’s now Dictionary.com‘s Word of the Year for 2025. We don’t understand it, either. What we do understand is our Games section, where not six, not seven, but eight daily options await. (AP News)

Sports

Star power. Last week, the local experts of Locked On ranked the top 10 players of the Dallas Stars so far this season. Find out who leads the packPS, it’s not Tyler Seguin.

Posting on our local job board is like using a GPS for hiring. It gets you to the right talent without the scenic detours. Ready to find your dream candidate? Post your job today. It’s 100% free.

Travel

Layer your days, not your clothes. Start your New Year’s resolutions with relaxation in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. During Pullin’s first address as chancellor, he encouraged all to “dream big, be bold, and lead on.”

Have you ever seen a TCU ice sculpture? Yeah, me neither — until I went to the inauguration ceremony for Chancellor Daniel Pullin last week. It’s the first leadership transition that TCU has had in 22 years. I feel like TCU is in great hands. Read his full address.
