News Notes

Pets

Yesterday, the Fort Worth Animal Care & Control center reopened the Chuck and Brenda Silcox Adoption Center for adoptions, fostering, and volunteering. Adoption appointments can be scheduled online. The North Campus remains closed, and intakes are still suspended due to the recent Canine Distemper Virus outbreak.

Civic

The city of Fort Worth is spending an extra $10.4 million on road construction this year. Since January, more than 80 city streets have been under construction to maximize road lifespan. The increase in funding should save the city some $50 million later on down the road — pun intended.

Weather

Got outdoor plans for Easter weekend? Check out WFAA meteorologist Peke Dulkus’ Easter weekend forecast. There may be a 50% chance of precipitation both Saturday and Sunday. You know what they say — April showers bring May flowers.

Plan Ahead

May will also bring three opportunities for educators, mothers, and veterans to visit John Wayne: An American Experience for free. If one of these applies to you, learn about the museum’s latest renovations, then experience the life and legacy of “The Duke” during Teacher Appreciation Week, Mother’s Day, or Armed Forces Day.

Musuem

The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame is expanding. The expansion, costing nearly $19.7 million beginning in May, will bring four new exhibit spaces, bonus school programs, and a 250-guest event space. A 16,000-sqft wing will be built moving the museum’s entrance to the southern face of the building. (Fort Worth Star-Telegram)

Park

A popular water slide at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor was seen being removed. The 80-ft tall ‘Black Hole,’ which can be seen as you pass by the park on I-30, is being demolished, but what’s replacing it has yet to be announced by the park. We’ll keep you updated as we discover more. (Mix 93.1)

Civic

The new Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system is looking at a go-live date of Tuesday, July 1. EMS is transitioning from MedStar and will now be an entity under the Fort Worth Fire Department, in which employees will be part of the FWFD. The goal is to improve efficiency and response times.

Biz

The Fort Worth oil company US Energy Development Corporation (USEDC) just made the biggest acquisition in its history. The company has bought 20,000 acres in West Texas, giving access to more oil and gas wells and increasing productivity. USEDC was founded in 1980 and has drilled ~4,000 wells across 13 states and Canada. (Fort Worth Inc.)

Announced

JPMorganChase is moving out of downtown and into the Cultural District, making it the second bank to announce it’s leaving downtown, after Wells Fargo. The bank will anchor the future 170,000-sqft Crescent Offices West on Camp Bowie and occupy three of eight floors. Construction is slated to be completed by January 2027. (Fort Worth Star-Telegram)

Sports

Dallas Cowboys offensive tackle and eight-time Pro Bowler Tyron Smith retired this week after 14 years in the NFL and 13 seasons with the Boys. Listen to the thoughts of the local experts of the Dallas Cowboys with LockedOn’s daily podcasts.

Number

$7,000. That’s how much dough you might have to drop if your old dog needs a hip replacement. Yes, pets are expensive, but they’re worth it — and this pet insurance could reimburse 90% of those expenses.*

The Wrap

A north Texas couple is getting married next month and had their engagement photos at none other than... Dairy Queen? That’s right. The future Mr. and Mrs. Blizzard (no, literally) are tying the knot and asked DQ to be part of their special day via TikTok. As a former Dairy Queen employee, I approve of this message. I would love to know your favorite Blizzard flavor. Mine is the Royal Cheesecake.
