Fort Worth 🤝 Paris Olympics

A view of Paris, France decked out with Paris 2024 Olympics signs and banners.
The Paris 2024 Olympics run from Friday, July 26 to Sunday, Aug. 11. | Erin McPherson, 6AM City
Light the torch and cue that iconic Olympics theme song — we’re ready for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics happening today through Sunday, Aug. 11.

At this summer’s Olympic Games, approximately 10,500 athletes from around the world will compete across 32 sports. Since we’re all about keeping it local, we’ve rounded up eight Paris 2024 Olympians with ties to Fort Worth and the surrounding areas to keep your eye on.

Let the Games begin.

Conner Prince, Shooting
Talk about starting things off with a bang. Prince hails from Burleson, TX (~25 minutes south of Fort Worth) and is part of the US Shotgun Team. Paris 2024 will be his first Olympics and he’ll be competing in skeet shooting beginning Friday, Aug. 2.

Hailey Van Lith, 3x3 Women’s Basketball
Originally from Wenatchee, WA, Van Lith played three seasons of college basketball at University of Louisville before recently transferring to Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. She earned her spot on Team USA’s small but mighty 3x3 Basketball team, which begins competing on Tuesday, July 30.

Bonus: Van Lith is the only TCU athlete playing for Team USA in Paris, but there are eight other TCU athletes playing for additional countries, including tennis star Cam Norrie for Great Britain.

Chiaka Ogbogu, Volleyball
This 6-ft-2 volleyball standout who plays the middle position is from Coppell, TX (~30 miles from Fort Worth) and is a University of Texas alumna. Team USA volleyball begins playing Monday, July 29.

🍻 A few new options for you

In part because of the art on the side of their building, False Idol Brewing and its regular patrons often refer to it as “The Wolf’s Den.” | Photo by FTWtoday
Fort Worth has a diverse brewing history, and boasts about 15 breweries + compelling beer stories, but the Mid-Cities breweries are making a name for themselves as well. Here are three to patronize:

False Idol Brewing | 7924 Maplewood Ave., North Richland Hills
A personal favorite of City Editor Ted, this spot along Route 26 changes its beer selection frequently, but is IPA-heavy in general. It also offers unique trivia events and all-day Sunday happy hours.

Turning Point Brewery | 1309 Brown Trail, Bedford
Open since 2018, try the Nerd Alert Triple IPA. “We’ve completely lost our minds with this one,” says the description in the taproom.

Keyworth Brewing | 6428 Davis Blvd., North Richland Hills
A newer entrant into the Mid-Cities breweries game, one notable element is how family-friendly it is. The interior is lined with bookshelves featuring kids’ activities and games for all ages.

The Buy

A foldable lap desk — it’s great for those who work from home, college students heading back to school, or anyone looking to read, write, or stream while they sip coffee in bed (read: us).

If you’re getting all into the competitive spirit of the Olympics, there’s a rubber duck race at the Bedford YMCA (2801 Forest Ridge Dr.) tomorrow at 9 a.m. You show up, decorate a duck, and they take off at 9:20 a.m. There are prizes for first through third, and Frio’s Pops will be there too.

Maybe your 100-meter isn’t what it used to be (... or ever was), but duck racing might be exactly your speed as the events commence in Paris.
