Cue Toto’s “Africa.” The annual wave of Saharan Dust has blown over 7,000 miles on tropical gusts to Fort Worth, turning the clear Texas skies to a murky haze that looks like smoke.
How does this happen?
First postulated in 1972, the Saharan air layer is an extremely hot and dry layer of the atmosphere that sits on top of the humid surface air over the Atlantic. It can carry over 60 million tons of dust annually to the Western Hemisphere.
While not overtly harmful, the increased levels of particulate matter in the dust can irritate people who have preexisting allergies, asthma, or respiratory concerns.
Weather eye on the horizon
On Wednesday, temperatures are supposed to peak with with a heat index value of 107 degrees in some parts of North Texas, but a cool front expected later this week.
With highs in the low 90s, there is a chance of scattered rain throughout the rest of the week and weekend — thank goodness. See what’s predicted for the rest of the summer.
“The ceiling fan is so nice.”
We know you’re craving some fresh air but bookmark these indoor activities to stay out of the heat and rain.
Keep the kiddos entertained with adventures in the air conditioning.

For decades, Center for Transforming Lives has worked side by side with women and children to help them successfully fight poverty and become self-sufficient through a proven, two-generation approach. Now, the anti-poverty agency is expanding to meet increased need in our community by relocating to a larger facility.
The new headquarters, Riverside Campus, will dramatically increase its capacity to provide vital services for families in need, including:
Stable housing
Better-paying jobs
Early childhood education
Positive mental health outcomes
Higher educational achievement
Economic mobility services
And more
It will also improve community access, located in a historically underserved area in southeast Fort Worth, where the poverty rate for single mothers with children under age 6 is 71%.
Scheduled to open in late 2024, the new 14-acre campus will allow these vital programs to grow — and more Tarrant County families to thrive. Center for Transforming Lives is not just building a new campus, it is building new paths to escape poverty.

The Lone Star State is famous for putting a Texas twist on other cuisines. | Photo by FTWtoday
Texans don’t need to sing “Deep in the Heart of Texas” to know how great our state is, but soon the culinary world will be humming right along. Michelin and Travel Texas have teamed up to bring the Michelin Guide — and its renowned stars — to the Lone Star State.
Set to launch later this year, the first Michelin Guide Texas will feature culinary gems in Fort Worth, Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio — showcasing the hottest sizzling Tex-Mex, juiciest barbecue, and cultural recipes that inspire gastronomy worldwide.
Michelin’s anonymous inspectors are already eating their way across Texas, evaluating restaurants based on: quality, flavor harmony, cooking techniques, chef’s personality, and consistency.
While we anxiously await the official guide, we figured we’d create one of our own. Recommend your favorite local eatery from hole-in-the-wall gems to fine dining.
