Downtown is breathing new life with fresh businesses. From upscale restaurants to entertainment venues and residential high-rises, here’s a look at the 10 new businesses + developments in the heart of the city.

The Archibald | Opening late summer
The rooftop bar will take over the former Houston Street Bar & Patio, which closed at the end of May. The remodeled space will include a downstairs lounge, a rooftop patio, and DJs on the weekends.
Big Laugh Comedy | Opening Fall 2023
The Austin-based comedy club will expand to Sundance Square with a two-story entertainment space inside the Kress Building. The renovation will include two stages, a kitchen + bar, a podcasting studio, and an event area.
Deco 969 | Opening early 2024
The 27-story high-rise held a topping-out ceremony this spring and expects to welcome residents in early 2024. It is the first residential tower to be built downtown in more than 30 years.

Thompson’s Bookstore
The newly renovated downtown bar re-opened earlier this month with an old-fashioned, library-themed bar, underground speakeasy, light-filled event space, and luxurious cigar lounge.
Sandman Signature Hotel
The hotel opened in June in the century-old W.T. Waggoner Building with 245 rooms and suites. The 20-story hotel preserved the original interior finishes of the tower, including an old-school mail drop.
Musume
Located inside the Sandman Signature Hotel, the upscale Asian restaurant features table-side ramen, fish flown in daily from Japan, and the country’s largest premium sake program.
The Origami Dog
The Sundance Square dog spa offers a wide range of services including grooming, de-shedding, manicures, and hair loss treatments.

Dusty Biscuit Beignets plans to close its doors at the end of the week. The New Orleans-style beignet shop on South Main Street announced its closure earlier this week, citing ongoing debts from the pandemic. It’s not clear if it will reopen, but a GoFundMe was set up to support it.
Kids
Fort Worth ISD students on all campuses will get free breakfast + lunch through the community eligibility provision. Parents will no longer be required to fill out the free and reduced-price applications to be covered. The district said this ensures all students have access to quality nutrition.
Real Estate
A home in north Fort Worth featured on a 2008 episode of ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” is on the market for $825,000. The Mediterranean-style home at 2880 Keller Hicks Rd. includes four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a two-story foyer, and a circular driveway. Take a look inside.
Environment
DFW Airport broke ground on a new electric Central Utility Plant (eCUP) this week as part of the airport’s commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. The $234 million facility will provide sustainable powered heating and cooling to the airport.
Open
Dogtopia — a daycare, boarding, and spa facility for pups — held a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week at its new CityView location. Located at 4608 Bryant Irvin Rd., the facility features indoor playrooms with air conditioning and webcam access so you can watch your dog play while you’re away.
Coming Soon
A new two-story QuikTrip convenience store is under construction near downtown. Located at the corner of West Lancaster and Henderson Avenues, the 8,200-sqft space features a large parking lot and patio seating. It’s unclear when it will open, but the project looks nearly completed. (Now.Town)

Here’s something to take the edge off — Austin-based CBD company Earlybird can now be bought at local stores. Known for its “full-spectrum” hemp products with natural THC, the edibles can be found at Roy Pope Grocery and Sunflower Shoppe off Camp Bowie Boulevard.

Today marks the beginning of the highly awaited Texas Sales Tax Holiday — aka the best time for back-to-school shopping.
The annual summer tax-free holiday runs through Sunday, Aug. 13, and is geared toward items under $100. Here’s what qualifies for tax exemption:
School supplies
Binders, book bags, calculators, composition books, crayons, erasers, glue, highlighters, and rulers, among other things. | Shop local stationary stores
