The CrossFit Games arrive in Fort Worth from Thursday, Aug. 8 to Sunday, Aug. 11. Here’s what to know.
What exactly is CrossFit, again?
It’s a gym-based fitness routine, usually consisting of a mix of weightlifting + cardio, focused on intense functional movement. CrossFit has about 15,000 gyms worldwide; it’s estimated that roughly five million people have tried it.
With ~15,000 gyms and five million CrossFitters worldwide, it’s impact is immense. or something!
What are the CrossFit Games?
Established in 2007, it’s the primary CrossFit event of the year, where individuals and teams compete to showcase their fitness.
Participants get to Fort Worth by first qualifying in workouts at their gym, then advancing past regional quarterfinal and semifinal rounds.
The 2024 CrossFit Games are not only the first ever hosted in Fort Worth — they’re the first hosted in Texas overall.
Can you attend?
Tickets for Dickies Arena, the main venue, are sold out. However, CrossFit will present the second night of the Games free at Farrington Field on Friday, Aug. 9 at 8 p.m. If you cannot attend in person, you can watch on ESPN platforms across all four days.
What are the events like? Will people be flipping cars?
Not necessarily. While CrossFit has been associated with crazy feats of strength in popular culture, the CrossFit Games are based on a series of specific workouts. For example, last year one such workout was named “Helena,” and consisted of three rounds of:
- 400-meter run
- 12 bar muscle-ups
- 21 dumbbell snatches (50 pounds for the men, 35 pounds for the women)
That’s not to say the wild-looking workouts are completely out. In 2023, they asked participants to master “The Pig Chipper,” as seen here.
