Trade away those blues, Mavs fans. Poor word choice, sorry.
While it can be easy to get swept up in the negative discourse surrounding this weekend’s stunning news — which saw the Mavericks trade superstar Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers — we’re trying to put a more positive spin on DFW’s current sporting landscape. Here’s a dime’s worth of reasons to turn that frown upside-down:
1. The Mavericks didn’t come out empty-handed. Anthony Davis was part of the deal and is hardly a scrub. With 10 NBA All-Star appearances, a Championship ring to his name, and a whole host of other accolades, AD is bringing a winner’s resume to Dallas.
2. Obviously, this is pure speculation, but Luka’s injuries could catch up with him. At only 25 years old, Dončić has already missed ~22% of games through injury since entering the league in 2018. If that happens to be the case, it may end up being a good business call on the Mavs’ part. Time will tell.
3. It’s tough to sugarcoat the Dallas Wings’ 2024 season — our WNBA team went 9-31 last campaign. To be optimistic, 2025 will surely be better.
4. The NFL Draft is coming up soon, and the Cowboys are picking No. 12 overall. What happened the last time the Cowboys picked 12th overall? Defensive star Micah Parsons joined America’s Team.
5. WalletHub just released its “Best & Worst Cities for Football Fans” rankings for 2025. Dallas came in at No. 2, and FTW also made the top 50. The list was compiled using metrics like fan engagement, number of championships, and ticket prices.
6. The Eagles might lose the Super Bowl.
7. The Dallas Stars are in a strong position to make the NHL postseason. Sitting second in their division, a shot at the team’s first Stanley Cup this century remains in the cards. Do you remember that 1999 win?
8. Hot dogs at the ready. Baseball season is coming up soon, and bookmakers say the Texas Rangers are among the top 10 favorites to win the World Series in 2025. Peep the schedule to plan out which games to go to this year.
9. DFW’s newest professional sports team returns to action this month. Dallas Trinity FC’s inaugural USL Super League season continues with its slate of spring games starting on Saturday, Feb. 15. Grab some tickets.
10. Looking ahead to 2026, AT&T Stadium is preparing to host nine matches at the FIFA World Cup. And if that’s not enough, Dallas is also going to be the International Broadcast Center for the tournament after City Council approval late last year. That means up to 5,000 media and broadcasting staff will be working from the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center downtown.
Did we miss any reasons to be optimistic about our sporting future? Let us know.
