April is National Volunteer Month, a celebration of those who give back to their communities. In Fort Worth, it’s the perfect time to start volunteering (or take your service to the next level). Let’s start with four opportunities happening this month:
Volunteer Day at the Butterfly Gardens in Denton | Friday, April 17 | 8 a.m. | Assist a Texas Woman’s University professor in a wildflower sanctuary and learn about native plants and gardening.
Trinity River Trash Bash | Saturday, April 18 | 8-10 a.m. | Join the Tarrant Regional Water District in removing litter from along the Trinity River.
Voice2Youth: Living the Dream Poetry Slam | Saturday, April 25 | 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m | The Thank You Darlin’ Foundation needs fun-loving volunteers to judge, keep score, or photograph the event.
Mayfest | Thursday, April 30-Sunday, May 3 | Times vary | Work in the Children’s Area, Texas Parks and Wildlife Area, or help serve beer and wine.
The North Texas Food Bank will host its annual Taste at the Star to support local food assistance this Friday, April 17 at the Ford Center at the Star in Frisco. Register here. (CBS News Texas)
Coming Soon
A DC chain is bringing smoothies, juices, healthy toasts, and protein waffles to Willow Park. Toastique will open Saturday, April 25, and the first 100 customers will receive $50 in rewards. But wait — there are even more grand opening specials. (CultureMap Fort Worth)
Announced
The Fort Worth Braves have selected their home football field. The Crowley ISD stadium will host the new semi-pro team starting this summer when their first season begins. The complete roster, cheerleading squad, and full schedule are set to be announced in the coming weeks.
Environment
Batteries, cooking oils, electronics, and fertilizers are just a few of the things that are prohibited to throw away in your regular trash bin in Fort Worth. Scan the whole list of prohibited trash and discover where to dispose of items safely. (Fort Worth Star-Telegram)
Transit
Construction on Avondale-Haslet Road is now underway. As part of a 2022 Fort Worth bond, the road will be widened to four lanes and traffic signals will be installed at two intersections. A pedestrian and bike lane is also included in this two-year project. (Fort Worth Star-Telegram)
Plan Ahead
Addison just announced the return of Kaboom Town!, but before fireworks can light up the night sky, organizers need help making the event No. 1 in the US. Show your love by voting, then attend the party at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 3. Tickets go on sale on Wednesday, June 3, and will likely sell out.
Development
Over three years ago, a 70-acre film studio was approved for construction in Mansfield. This summer, that studio could start to come to fruition. Plans for the upcoming development hint at sound stages, restaurants, coffee shops, bars, shops, hotels, and residences. It’s expected to be complete next year. (Fort Worth Star-Telegram)

This No. 1 best-selling jelly tote bag that we’re low-key obsessed with for spring and summer. The tip-proof design keeps your tote upright, but it still folds flat to pack or store. It’s also waterproof, easy to clean, and carry-on approved — hello, beach vacay bag. Grab your favorite color (we like iridescent) and let the compliments pour in.
“Smile. You paid for this” was a sign I saw at the Fort Worth Zoo Run this weekend. Although I didn’t beat my personal record, I was still smiling. When you sign up to race, you get one day of free admission to the zoo. Will you join me next year?
