🍯 Catching Forbes with honey

Honey, salt, and magnesium. These were the ingredients chosen to create HNY+, a new type of performance gel that landed three Texas Christian University (TCU) grads on the latest Forbes 30 Under 30 list.
Ross Cooley, a 23-year-old lifelong Austin resident, met his cofounders, Liam Brogan + Luke Smialowicz, while studying entrepreneurship at TCU. Tired of taking pre-workout that was full of artificial ingredients, the trio began making their own at home.
“We started researching and found out the benefits of organic honey as a carbohydrate source and as an energy source,” Cooley told Laura Figi of ATXtoday. “Taking a spoonful of honey, putting a bunch of powders on it, drinking coffee — it was just like a mess, and it was super complex.”
They began giving out gels to runners and athletes on TCU’s campus to get feedback. After graduating, the team took HNY+ to Austin, raised some capital, and began working with a manufacturer to get their first official round of inventory.

Y’all, I did it. I finished my first 5K in Dallas for the St. Paddy’s Day Dash. My time was 36:26 (I warned you it wouldn’t be incredible), but it was a super fun day, and I’m definitely doing it again next year. Though performance gels are typically utilized for long-distance races, I couldn’t resist whipping out a packet of HNY+ after mile one. It’s as delicious as I expected and gave me a burst of speed. If you love honey and running, then you will love this gel.
