This Sunday, Aug. 17 marks 817 Day. While it may not be an official holiday, it’s an excuse for local businesses and organizations to host special deals and events as a nod to one of Tarrant County’s area codes.
Two events in Burleson are on our radar. First up, Station 330 is handing out a chicken-fried chicken plate with buttermilk mashed potatoes and gravy, for $8.17 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Second, JM Wellness and Aesthetics is offering $8.17 specials on injections per unit, such as B12, lipotropic, vitamin D, and more. Appointments are required.
Be on the lookout this week for more 817 Day events, and if you spy one interesting, send it to us.

Eeeek. A 10-ft, 7-in alligator was removed from Eagle Mountain Lake last week. There were no reported injuries — only a jump scare. WFAA’s Paul Livengood shared on X. If residents spot an alligator, they should contact the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. We hope we don’t see you later, alligator. (WFAA)

Who’s the cow behind Cowtown? Today, we’re introducing you to Molly the cow — aka the City of Fort Worth’s mascot.
Origin
In 1909, a longhorn head sculpture was placed on the Livestock Exchange Building to honor the cattle industry. Legend has it that the sculpture was placed there so it could have a vantage point of all the activity in town. It was later given the name “Molly,” which is said to identify with the first longhorn in a herd.
Molly became the official mascot in 2000. She symbolizes reverence for the past, reflects our city’s Western heritage, and promotes a sense of unity and pride.

Apparently, the Alamo in San Antonio was just named the No. 1 must-see attraction in Texas. Call me biased, but I think the Stockyards are the crème de la crème of tourism attractions. The Water Gardens are pretty unique, too. Did you know they were featured in a Kendrick Lamar music video?
But what do I know? I’ve never seen the Alamo or been to San Antonio, for that matter. I heard it was small. But, here in FTW, we have many amazing local gems — a few hidden and mysterious ones as well. Every once in a while, I encourage readers to send me their favorites for a chance at being mentioned in the newsletter.
