Editor’s Pick

🍷 Spicy marg, Sauvy B, please

FTW_sauv_b

Earlier this summer, we asked our readers to predict what the drink of summer 2025 would be. Only 22% answered sauvignon blanc and jalapeños. With both Today and Texas Monthly spotlighting the spicy libation, it was enough to make us want to try one anyway.

Editor Elizabeth here. Last week, I visited Hudson House to investigate this so-called “Spicy Sauvy B.” When ordering, the server asked, “Did you get that from TikTok?”

Kind of.

The verdict? It’s exactly what it sounds like: a crisp glass of wine with a jalapeño kick. But fair warning — it got spicier the more I sipped.

Try this at your next outing and tell us what you think.

News Notes

An image of a red jellyfish on a USPS stamp. The background is black, with a landscape orientation, and the writing "bioluminescent life" and "USA forever" written on the sides. The red jellyfish fills most of the rectangular space and is swimming to the right with its tentacles hanging behind it.

What do you sting of this?

See that picture above? Imagine getting one of those in the mail. No, not the jellyfish. USPS is hosting a vote through the end of September to bring back some of its most popular stamps, with options including Pixar characters, American history, and birthday shoutouts. Have your say.

Mansion Monday

We’re admiring this charming 1930s, 2,860-sqft, Tudor-style home near TCU, with its arched doorways, a sun room, and stainless steel countertops in the kitchen. The design on the staircase gives it that extra pizzazz. Bonus — it even comes with a detached garage.
Beyoncé ended her Cowboy Carter tour with a nostalgic surprise, reuniting Destiny’s Child to sing a medley of their greatest hits. While we couldn’t be there in Las Vegas when it happened, you’ll find us performing the encore at Yupp’s. (Variety)

Last week, WFAA’s Pete Delkus declared “the gates of hell were wide open” after North Texas reached its first triple-digit temperature and hottest day of the year. Good news — they may have shut. Our favorite weatherman’s 14-day forecast looks much cooler.

The overall cost of living in Fort Worth is lower than the national average.
Let’s talk about the cost of living in Fort Worth. The median household income in Tarrant County is $80,043 according to the US Census Bureau. State-wise, Texas is No. 23 in the country for median income at ~$42,329 per household. Nice — we are well above the state average.

But just how expensive do we compare to Austin (Hey ATXtoday)? Is it cheaper elsewhere? Let’s crunch the numbers.

Fort Worth’s cost vs. Austin’s cost

At a glance, you can get a good sense of Fort Worth’s cost by comparing it to our neighbors. We took a look at the cost of living in Fort Worth compared to Austin. Here’s what we found:
  • The cost of living is 29.1% higher in the state capital.
  • To maintain our standard of living, we would need to bring in $64,571 to our Austin household.
  • The average cost of housing in Austin is a staggering 88% higher than Fort Worth.

Answered

Last week, we quizzed readers on Fort Worth’s sign, and we stumped the majority.

Downtown Fort Worth

If Fort Worth’s origins trace back to June 6, 1849, when Major Ripley A. Arnold raised a US flag establishing “Camp Worth,” that would make Cowtown a Gemini. Only 33.3% of subscribers guessed correctly.

We also asked readers to share a favorite birthday memory, and three stood out to us the most.
  • Kathy B. said she enjoyed dinner at Campisi’s one year.
  • Pjae S. introduced her kids to the cattle drive in the Stockyards.
  • Who remembers The Balcony on Camp Bowie? Debi W. enjoyed a juicy tenderloin topped with crab meat and bearnaise sauce, and a Grand Marnier soufflé for dessert. Yum!

The Wrap

Today is... my 31st birthday! As much as I’d love to dive headfirst into a Grand Marnier soufflé, I think a La La Land latte and a bundtlet from Nothing Bundt Cakes will satisfy me just fine. You can get those, as well as 13 other freebies, on your birthday. So if you need me, I’ll be spending the day skipping all across town and going down that list.
