News Notes

Today Is

Independence Day. America has been celebrating this day for 249 years since the Declaration of Independence was formally adopted on July 4, 1776. Round up your family and friends and check out this list of fireworks shows across DFW. Fun fact — it’s also Joe T. Garcia’s 90th anniversary.
In honor of Joe T’s 90th anniversary of being open, WFAA journalist Paul Livengood shared 90 celebrities who have dined at the famous Tex-Mex restaurant — stars like Tanya Tucker, Elvis Presley, Paul McCartney, and Kesha. (WFAA)

Drink

$2.99. That’s the average cost of a regular cup of black coffee in Texas. While we can’t guarantee prices will be cheaper in Fort Worth, we can guarantee that the city’s coffee offerings are far from regular — just check out our guide to local coffee shops. (Coffeeness)

Pets

If you’re looking to add a dog to the family, a Löwchen will cost you a pretty penny. The little lion dogs were named the most expensive breed, sometimes costing $10,000+. A more affordable option would be to find your furever friend at a local shelter like the Humane Society of North Texas. (Mental Floss)

Answered

Recently, we asked y’all a very philosophical question about hot dogs. And the results are in. We received 75+ reader responses + one reader in particular gave us food for thought: “Technically, yes. Culturally, no. Existentially? It’s a hot dog. And maybe that’s enough.”

Post of the Day

Winslow Foundation is a local nonprofit that supports animal rescues in Tarrant County. This week, it announced a partnership with Fort Worth Animal Care + Control as an official “Chip Spot” — just in time for the Fourth of July.

If you find a lost dog or cat, no need to head to a vet or shelter. Stop at Winslow’s Wine Cafe and a team member will use a microchip scanner to help reconnect furry friends with their families.

The Wrap

I love what the Winslow Foundation is doing. More pets go missing on the Fourth of July than on any other day of the year. In fact, the Animal Care + Control sees about a 40% increase in calls for lost pets on the holiday.

Also — the city of Fort Worth posted more tips on keeping pets safe from the stress of fireworks, like keeping them inside a safe space with familiar comforts — even masking the noise with soothing music. Just in case, an AirTag can bring some peace of mind.
