Next Monday, May 26 marks John Wayne’s 118th birthday, and the Wayne family is gearing up for a whole weekend of celebration.
Last week, City Editor Elizabeth met with Anita La Cava Swift — John Wayne’s eldest granddaughter. They talked about what Anita is most looking forward to at the event, her most cherished memories of John Wayne, and more. Anita was 21 years old when he died.
Q: What is the earliest memory you have with your grandfather? A: I lived with him for two years after I was born, and I have memories of him during Christmas mostly. He loved Christmas and opening presents, but what he really loved was being with all of us grandkids.
Q: What are you most excited about for John Wayne Day weekend? A: I love hearing from people. They always have a good story to tell me. I love it, because they tell me, “Oh, he reminded me of my grandfather,” or “he reminded me of my dad.”
One of our favorite trends of the summer: textured handbags. From straw to beaded, these are our top five picks:
🌟 This standout wood bead bracelet handle bag is the perfect accessory for your beach vacation.
🌟 This versatile braided tote made with 70% recycled plastic is available in 35+ colors.
🌟 MANGO’s woven canvas crossbody with smooth faux leather detailing offers fun textural interplay.
🌟 This crescent straw bag with an adjustable shoulder strap will be our go-to all summer long.
🌟 An elegant rope clutch is a must for summertime weddings and cocktail parties.
For you dear subscribers, I asked Anita what she made of all the pop culture references to her grandfather (looking at you, Lady Gaga). She responded with, “they’re pretty funny.” She even had her own to add: a newly-released song by Louisiana-born country singer Kylie Frey.

Yesterday, we introduced Fort Worth’s GREENprint + quizzed our readers on city park trivia.
36.4% of readers knew that the first city park was Hyde Park.
54.5% knew it was designated in 1873.
36.4% thought that Fort Worth’s parks department was established in 1917. It was actually established in 1909, which just 18.2% knew.
We also asked readers which park they’d nominate for a makeover + to share their favorite park.
Most readers nominated Burk Burnett Park (needs play space for kids) or Trinity River Park (needs wider paths).
Reader David R. said his favorite park was Heritage Park Plaza for the landscape architect’s tree-filled, water-woven tribute to Fort Worth’s founding spirit. The park is temporarily closed for construction, but we’re excited for its upcoming completion.
