Plan your trip to check out some of the current and upcoming exhibitions, plus newer acquisitions in the museum’s permanent exhibit.

Special exhibitions

Current exhibition | Art of War in the Renaissance: The Battle of Pavia Tapestries, through Sunday, Sept. 15

The museum’s current special exhibition features seven large-scale tapestries complemented by examples of arms and armor from the 1500s. The tapestries that span the room’s walls — designed by court artist Bernard van Orley and woven by Willem and Jan Dermoyen — depict Emperor Charles V’s victory over French King Francis in the 16th century Italian Wars.

Upcoming exhibition | Dutch Art in a Global Age: Masterpieces from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, November 10, 2024-February 9, 2025

This winter, the museum will bring in paintings from the the Boston Museum of Fine Arts’ renowned collection, including works by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Gerrit Dou, Jacob van Ruisdael, and Maria Schalcken.

The collection will also include prints, maps, and decorative objects from the 17th and 18th centuries — all of which will explore how the Dutch’s then-booming role in international commerce sparked change in the Netherlands.

A framed painting of several horses hangs on the wall.

This new acquisition is thought to be one of the earliest in Stubb’s series of paintings depicting friezes of brood mares and their offspring.
