If you’ve been singing the lyrics “I walk a lonely road” a lot lately, you’re not… alone (well, in a sense). Fort Worth roads are actually even lonelier than many, but we’ll get to that in a minute.
If national averages indicate anything, it’s that roads overall may have been more lonely during the past few years. According to a recent data report by Streetlight, annual average daily walking trips dropped 36% in the US between 2019 and 2022.
How does that national average shake out in Fort Worth, and where are the best spots to raise those national trend (and step count) numbers? Let’s take a look.
By the numbers
-39% | Percent change in walking trips in Texas
-42% | Percent change in walking trips in Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington
What does a percent change in walking trips mean? Say a metro area sees a -50% change in walking trips. This means, on average, walking trips declined by 50% in that area. (For the record, none of the top 100 metros in the study saw that much of a decline — the biggest dip was 49% in Akron, OH.)
Where to walk the walk
Wondering where you can get your steps in? Check out these pedestrian-friendly spots around town, from local parks to protected streets.
Trinity Trails | With 100+ miles of hiking, biking, and dog-walking trails across the county, there’s always somewhere nearby to get some steps in.
The Shops at Clearfork | Break in those Louis Vuittons with a walk to brunch, happy hour, or of course, more shopping.
Sundance Square | A quick jaunt will help you fit in more of the downtown food + wine offerings around the block — and you’ll probably catch some live music, too.

After introducing you to the Fort Worth Zoo’s Exploration and Learning Center last week, we asked our readers to take the old with the new. Over 80% of respondents knew that the zoo was founded over 100 years ago in 1909 — but what was it like?
It started as the Forest Park Zoo with one lion, two bear cubs, an alligator, a coyote, a peacock, and a few rabbits. Since its humble beginnings, it’s grown to house 7,000+ critters from 542 species — and along the way, came under the management of the Fort Worth Zoological Association.
