Another Sriracha shortage?

Summer of 2024 may bring another Sriracha shortage

A summer without Sriracha? It’s a possibility now that Huy Fong Foods plans to stop production until after Labor Day. “All orders that have been scheduled beginning on May 6, 2024, will be canceled,” the California-based hot sauce company said. That’s nearly a four-month pause on the production of Sriracha, chili garlic sauce, and sambal oelek.

This isn’t the first time Huy Fong couldn’t deliver the heat. Last year, we reported a Sriracha shortage due to droughts in Mexico (where the jalapeno peppers are sourced). This year’s culprit? The peppers are “too green.”

Huy Fong’s “red rooster” Sriracha is known for, well, being red. When jalapenos are too green, they dilute that iconic color. It isn’t just the hue that’s halting the hot sauce — green peppers are also less spicy than their more developed red pepper peers. And what’s Sriracha without spice?

Good news, though. Other Sriracha creators aren’t reporting the same red jalapeno shortage. You can get your hands on some hot sauce by visiting one of these local grocers.

Hao’s Grocery and Cafe | 120 St. Louis Ave.
The Near Southside business offers a multitude of hot sauces, including char siu + gochujang. Bonus: Check out the cooking classes on Instagram.

Inlay Asian Market | 5332 Trail Lake Dr.
In addition to hot sauces, the store’s product selection includes multiple curries and ramen options.

Bo Kham Asian Market | 7630 N. Beach St., Ste. 106
Choose from multiple sauces and a variety of jalapenos, if you dare dabble in making your own hot sauce.

Fxcking Hot Sauces | E-commerce from Dallas
Grab more than a dozen small batch, craft hot sauces. Pro tip: Go for Everde I’m Hustling, a steal at only $10.

H Mart | Haltom City
The Asian mega-grocery is coming soon to the intersection of North Beach Street and NE Loop 820. While it won’t help you with this summer’s shortage, keep it in mind for the future.
