Marfa’s Prada store is an iconic landmark. | Photo by Lee Andrews
Greetings from Marfa. If you love cowboy boots and country songs, paranormal happenings, and huge pieces of minimalist art, then get in the Chevy — we’re going to Marfa.
Why go?
The Marfa Lights: Since early pioneer times, folks have reported sightings of unexplained, ghostly blobs of colorful light dancing on Marfa’s skyline after dusk. Some say it’s paranormal, others say it’s an atmospheric coincidence.
Ballroom Marfa: Keep the artsiness going, and check out the rotating exhibitions of contemporary art at this non-collecting museum in the heart of town.
The Prada Store: You’ve probably seen photos of this. It’s a real storefront on the outskirts of town, but no designer shoes or bags were ever sold there. Instead, it’s a conceptual art installation, created in 2005 by Berlin-based artists Elmgreen & Dragset.
Just outside Marfa, visitors will find a larger-than-life Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean to commemorate the shooting site of “Giant” and Dean’s death.

Food: Hotel Saint George’s bar and restaurant is perfect for more upscale dinner and drinks (the cocktails especially are phenomenal), as is Jett’s Grill.
Drink:Every outlaw needs a good watering hole, and Lost Horse Saloon should quench your thirst for the authentic cowboy experience. Planet Marfa is a quirky, outdoor-only bar that’s proven to be a tried-and-true favorite for locals and visitors alike.
Shop: Marfa Museum Thrift Store showcases historical artifacts from the region, plus the opportunity to score a desert treasure to take back home.

‘Top Chef’ alum Fabio Viviani brings bite-sized desserts to Fort Worth
JARS will open at 3000 South Hulen St. | Photo provided by JARS
Italian-born celebrity chef Fabio Viviani will open his gourmet dessert shop JARS in Fort Worth this Friday, Jan. 19 at 11:30 a.m. at 3000 S. Hulen St., behind Le Margot.
The menu will feature bite-sized desserts like cheesecake, tiramisu, and salted caramel pecan pie — to name a few — layered in single-serve jars. There are even a couple of gluten-free creations and limited edition JARS that will change weekly.
Also on the menu are scratch-made flavored waters called refreshers and a variety of soft-serve sundae creations.
Viviani partnered with local franchisees Tejal and Jason Wible — the family behind Dogtopia — to bring the company from Chicago to the Lone Star State. The Cowtown shop is the first Texas location with many more planned for Dallas, Highland Park, Plano, and Frisco.
In 2008, Viviani appeared on the reality TV competition series “Top Chef,” and returned in 2010 to compete on “Top Chef: All Stars.” Since then, he’s authored several successful cookbooks.

Sleep mist, a cozy sweatshirt, or tea from Six & Main’s homebody collection. That’s right, there’s a collection specifically devoted to staying comfy and cozy at home (count us in).
Despite going to college in Iowa, I will never be used to the brutal cold like we’ve experienced this week. I’m looking for the best place to get cozy by a fireplace — if you know a restaurant or bar that has a working fireplace (indoor or outdoor), let me know.
I’ll share a list of recommendations in a future newsletter.
