The Fort Worth Zoo welcomed a new member to the World of Primates habitat. ICYMI: The Western lowland gorilla, named Bruno, was born on Sunday, Nov. 6 weighing between four and five pounds.

Last week, we asked what you thought the baby ape should be named, here’s what you recommended.

  • Boots
  • Jabba
  • Drayton, nickname Dray
  • Turkey, because he was born in November
  • Gulliver, nickname Gully
  • Geordi
  • George
  • Eddie
  • Go-Go

The baby ape is only the second Western lowland gorilla to be born at the zoo. He was born to Gracie and Elmo, the parents of Gus, who was born at the zoo nearly seven years ago.

The new addition is not only a win for the zoo, but also for the Western lowland gorilla population. According to the zoo, these types of gorillas are critically endangered because of hunting, disease, and a low reproductive rate. The zoo participates in a cooperative breeding program for gorillas that maintains a healthy, self-sustaining population to help prevent their extinction.

Celebrate the zoo’s newest addition during the 30th Anniversary Festival on Saturday, Nov. 19. Guests can enjoy half-price admission all day along with live musical acts, photo ops, giveaways, and animal-themed activities.
