Orbis and Alcon’s Flying Eye Hospital in Fort Worth, TX

Ever looked through a Flying Eye Hospital? See what we did there. Fort Worth-based ophthalmology company Alcon teamed up with Orbis International, an eye-care nonprofit, to host an eye clinic in the sky.

Over the last two weeks, the Flying Eye Hospital has been stationed at Alliance Airport to train nearly 50 medical professionals from countries around the Caribbean to help communities fight blindness. Students also received hands-on training from clinical staff and Alcon bioengineers at the state-of-the-art Alcon Experience Center off I-35 W.

“We live in a great community in Fort Worth where people believe in helping one another,” said Dr. Rick Weisbarth, Alcon US Head of Professional Affairs and Foundation board member. “Alcon is able to take that to the next level and help people around the world who may not have access to quality eye care.”

This training session is the first in-person use of the cutting-edge ophthalmic surgical simulation facility since the COVID-19 pandemic. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Flying Eye Hospital’s first flight, as well as Alcon’s 75th anniversary, supporting eye care across the world for more than a blink of an eye.
