Buck up for a wild ride

The PBR World Finals are busting through the gates this weekend. The Professional Bull Riders (PBR) annual championship has called Las Vegas home since the sport was founded in 1992 — now the iconic showdown is hitchin’ up in Cowtown permanently.

 

The first three rounds will kick off Fri., May 13-Sun., May 15 + the final five rounds will be held Thurs., May 19-Sun., May 22.

Development 

  • A new $1 million Amazon distribution warehouse is coming to south Fort Worth. Amazon has filed a permit for a new facility with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Construction is expected to start at 10001 S. Freeway at the beginning of July and run through September. 🏗️ (Community Impact)

  • Dr. Teresa Wagner, an assistant professor at the UNT Health Science Center at Fort Worth, received a $272,000 grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to educate community health workers. The funding will provide free certification classes in English and Spanish to people working in rural or underserved areas. 🏥 (Fort Worth Inc.)

  • The City of Fort Worth has named Reyne Telles the first Chief Communications Officer. He will take up the position on Mon., June 6 + oversee the city’s Communications and Public Engagement Department, Governmental Relations and Educational Strategies Divisions, and the City Manager’s administrative staff. 

Biz

Closing

  • Micheals, the popular arts and crafts retailer, is shutting down the e-commerce part of its Fort Worth facility on 860 Westport Pkwy. The closure will result in 202 permanent job lay-offs that will begin on Fri., June 24. E-commerce operations will be returned to local stores rather than centralized in Fort Worth.   • Whiskey Meyers is coming to Dickies Arena on Sat., October 15. The genre-bending band has added Cowtown to their Tornillo Tour and will be performing their country-meets-rock-meets-blues beats alongside the Read Southall Band and the Weathered Souls. Tickets are available here. 🎸

  • It’s heating up for the Dallas Stars in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Stars fell to the Calgary Flames in Game 4 on Monday night, tying the series 2-2. But this time, they’ll last through the summer heat. “Wildflower,” a new art installation at the East Regional Public Library (6301 Bridge St.) is almost complete.

 

The painted steel sculpture was designed by Austin-based design firm Fyoog to bring the bright colors of Texas wildflowers to Fort Worthians all year long. Stay tuned for information about the grand opening and dedication. 🌻
