Did you know Fort Worth is the fifth-largest city in Texas?
Nah, just kidding. If you know us, you know we’re here for the deep cuts — and there are plenty of interesting factoids to go around. As connoisseurs of the quirky + unconventional, we put together this list of 15 interesting facts about FTW. Maybe you’ve lived here your whole life and know some of these — or maybe you’ll learn something new.

1. The City of Fort Worth began as Camp Worth on the bank of the Trinity River in 1849. Camp Worth was named for Mexican-American War hero Gen. William Jenkins Worth. In fact, we just celebrated the Fort’s birthday on June 6.
2. One of Bonnie and Clyde’s hideouts from the law was the historic Stockyards Hotel in Fort Worth.
3. Texas pink granite was used to build the Tarrant County Courthouse in 1895. It was modeled after the Texas State Capitol with the exception of the clock tower.
4. USS Fort Worth (LCS-3) is the first ship of the United States Navy named after the city.

5. There are three museums that celebrate the city’s cattle industry heritage – The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame, the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, and the Cattle Raisers Museum.
6. The biggest private Civil War collection is in the Texas Civil War Museum in Fort Worth.
7. On Sept. 21, 1908, the Palace Theater Light Bulb began burning as a backstage light at the Old Byers Opera House. It continues to burn today.
8. Fort Worth contains over 1,000 natural gas wells.

GOAL — The FIFA World Cup announced Dallas as a host city for the 2026 World Cup. The games will be played at Arlington’s AT&T Stadium, which will hold about 92,000 fans. The Dallas Sports Commission estimates that the games will create 3,000 jobs with a $400 million impact. ⚽ (WFAA)

When Reata announced that it will leave Sundance Square in 2024 when its lease ends, the community was asked to make location suggestions — and y’all delivered. Learn
The public library system is offering freejob-skills training as part of a new computer skills and digital literacy initiative. Classes will be offered at all 17 library locations and will focus on computer and software skills + the use of technology in everyday life. 💼
Health
After a vote from the City Council, the city will now start offering free menstrual products at libraries, community centers + the municipal court. The vote was inspired by two Fort Worth ISD students who successfully advocated for the same products to be provided in our public schools. (Community Impact)

Head out to Sundance Square this Sat., June 18 as finalists in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition are live-streamed on the plaza during their last performance. Stick around for the announcement of the 2022 Cliburn medalists + a three-hour performance by Adonis Rose and the Fort Worth Jazz Orchestra. 🎹

“A dream fulfilled” — that’s how Opal Lee described the National Juneteenth Museum coming to Fort Worth. The museum released new designs this week and said the building will capture the spirit of Juneteenth + celebrate the cultural heritage of the Historic Southside.
The museum is expected to break ground next year and open in 2025. Until then, explore the museum’s new website and learn about the architecture designed by Bjarke Ingels Group and KAI Enterprises.
